This course will provide you with an opportunity for you to fulfil your creative ambitions and develop your understanding of current design practice.

You will gain an overview of the whole design and production process. It will give you the knowledge, understanding and skills to enter a range of careers in the graphic arts industries.

Work-based learning is at the heart of this course and is embedded into the modules.

Artist

Average salary - £28,800

Artists create original works of art using appropriate techniques, materials and media, design artwork and illustrations and restore damaged pieces of art.

Day-to-day tasks**:
  • Work from your own ideas, or a commission from an individual or an organisation
  • Sell your work through an agent or through galleries, exhibitions, shops or online
  • Research subjects, materials and new artistic techniques
  • Network with agents, dealers, gallery owners and other artists
  • Attend exhibitions, join artists’ groups and run local art projects
  • Work as ‘artist in residence’ – running classes and workshops in places like schools, prisons or hospitals
Working environments

You could work in a creative studio, in a workshop or from home.

Graphic Designer

Average salary - £28,200

Graphic Designers use illustrations, visual and multimedia techniques to convey a message for informational, entertainment, advertising, promotion or publicity purposes.

Day-to-day tasks**:
  • Discuss the client’s requirements and come up with creative ideas
  • Produce rough drafts and present your ideas
  • Prepare designs using specialist software, and produce a final layout
  • Make presentations to clients for feedback and approval
  • Explain requirements to other design professionals
  • Keep up with design trends and developments in software tools
Working environments

You could work in a creative studio, in an office or at a client’s business.
