What is South Yorkshire Institute of Technology?

South Yorkshire Institute of Technology is an employer-led higher education provision for STEM occupations, focused on meeting current and future needs of employers across the South Yorkshire region.

It’s a collaboration between five education providers and 5,000 regional employers to support the improvement of technical skills.

RNN Group is one of SYIoT’s six education providers. The others include Barnsley College, DN Colleges, The Sheffield College, Sheffield Hallam University, and The University of Sheffield AMRC Training Centre.

SYIoT launched in September 2023 backed by over £21 million in funding from the Department for Education and partners. It’s one of 21 IoTs nationally.

What are Institutes of Technology?

Institutes of Technology specialise in delivering higher technical education in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) occupations.

They offer a wide range of training from level 3 T Levels up to level 7 Master’s degrees.

These courses have been designed and delivered with employers to better prepare learners for the complexities of today’s workplace. By shaping the curriculum to suit their needs, businesses are helping build the talented workforce needed for productivity and growth.

For learners, Institutes of Technology offer an alternative route into high paid jobs and increased career opportunities by ensuring they have the right skills employers need.

The government has already invested £290m in IoTs, primarily in 21 locations where an increased higher technical skills base will impact on the region. South Yorkshire is one of them.

Each Institute of Technology has a specific target to increase underrepresentation, such as increasing the number of women working in some technical areas.

We’ve also achieved the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) Silver Rating for our HE provision. This means our students have a high standard of teaching, learning, assessment, resources and support, as well as going on to success after their studies.

Students considering higher technical education want two things: flexibility and affordability. We offer both.

There are various options for part-time study, including evening courses. This helps learners complete their courses around work and family life. But most of our full-time courses have condensed timetables, so you might only be in two days a week anyway.

And as for affordability, our course fees are significantly lower than the average university. You can expect to pay between £6,900 and £7,600 a year for full-time courses and up to £4,750 a year for part-time study. Universities in England can charge up to up to £9,250 for undergraduate courses.

Higher technical courses can be paid for via Student Loans. But some learners might find their course fees are be supported by the new Lifelong Learning Entitlement. Other avenues of financial support are also available for some University Centre Rotherham learners.
