What is the Foundation Degree in Learning Support?
The Foundation Degree in Learning Support is a vocational programme designed for individuals who work alongside teachers in an educational setting.
The programme allows participants to obtain a degree-level qualification validated by the University of Hull whilst continuing their valuable work in a practical learning environment.
This is a part-time course – one evening per week over 3 years.

This programme aims to enhance your knowledge, understanding, and skills in learning support. It provides a higher qualification that boosts your employability and enhances you professionally, personally, and academically.
The course focuses on pedagogical theory in the context of the learning support worker, helping practitioners better understand their role within the wider teaching and learning environment. It is designed to help advance careers in learning support and can also serve as a stepping-stone towards further study in teaching.
Teaching and assessment
The course is delivered through face-to-face sessions and supported by online materials.
Assessment across the programme includes a variety of tasks such as essays, presentations, creating digital resources, case studies, and reports.
There are no examinations in the programme.

Our HE Achievement Coach, Beth Hall, provides a range of services for Higher Education learners on a one-to-one basis. This includes:

What will you need?
You will need to have a current placement for 2 full days (or equivalent) per week for the three-years’ duration of the course.Â
This can be paid or voluntary.
- Evidence that you will be able to succeed in study at degree-level.
- A basic level of IT skills.
- Although we do not require maths, English language or science GCSEs for acceptance onto the Foundation Degree, you may need such qualifications if you wish to move into teaching after this programme.
Future opportunities
Completing the Foundation Degree in Learning Support can improve job opportunities and serve as the first step towards obtaining a full honours degree through a top-up pathway.
Students have the option to progress onto the BA (Hons) Education and Professional Development at the University Centre Rotherham.
Alternatively, upon achieving the full Level 5 qualification, students can apply to Sheffield Hallam University for the top-up year, leading to the attainment of QTS at Level 6.
