Jamie Reid’s Legacy Inspires Creative Buzz at UCR
Last week, we were thrilled to welcome John Marchant to University Centre Rotherham (UCR) for an exciting live brief inspired by the legendary artist and designer Jamie Reid. Known for his iconic and rebellious designs, Reid’s work set the perfect stage for our students to unleash their creativity.
During the session, students explored an incredible archival collection curated by Flux, diving into historical objects and different creative eras. Inspired by Reid’s bold style, they were challenged to reimagine his techniques and create artwork that reflects their feelings about Rotherham today.
John, who worked closely with Jamie Reid for over 20 years, gave an engaging talk about Reid’s life, art, and the stories behind his work. His passion and insights made the session unforgettable, offering students a rare glimpse into the world of an extraordinary creative mind.
Graphic Design tutor, Tracy Gelder, said:
“What an amazing opportunity to delve into the life of an extraordinary artist/designer Jamie Reid. I would like to thank David Sinclair who’s collaboration with Children Capital of Culture and FLUX for introducing John Marchant who has been responsible for archiving Jamie Reid’s, world famous graphic designer, work. Our Graphic Design Degree students had the pleasure to discuss the works of Jamie Reid through conversation with John Marchant and bringing his work to life at our University Centre Rotherham.
John was brilliant in showcasing Jamie Reid’s work and discussing his life in such a wonderful engaging way. The students loved the lecture/informal talk and were given a rare opportunity into someone’s life and works of art.”
The students loved every moment, and the results of their hard work will soon be popping up around Rotherham town for everyone to enjoy. This project is a brilliant celebration of art, history, and how creativity can bring fresh perspectives to our local community.
We can’t wait for you to see what they’ve created – stay tuned!
