Triple Threat: Three Graphics Students Start Their Own Businesses
Two University Centre Rotherham Graphics Design students have started their own businesses in the heart of Rotherham town centre.
Ross Purcell, a Level 4 Graphics Design student, and former Level 3 Rotherham College student Connor Simpson, decided to start their own clothing business using their skills to create a brand. The business is called ‘ROSCO’ and has various clothing lines.
As well as working on ROSCO, Ross produces graphic designs and illustrations of football players on their respective shirts, and has a huge following on social media.
The creation of a ROSCO product is a complex process, but Ross feels he has learned all the important industry skills required to do this at UCR.
He said: ‘’Learning skills at university has given me lots of experience with cameras, and digital skills to give me well-rounded knowledge to apply to a business.
‘’Connor and I think of ideas, sketches and designs until we find one that we like and one that appeals through using consumer research. We then find suppliers to order from to sell the clothing.
‘’AJ Tracey has worn one of our coats which was a huge moment for me. University Centre Rotherham has given me the confidence I need to use my graphics skills at an entrepreneurial level.’’
Samuel Bagley, also a Level 4 Graphic Design student, uses the same premise for his business ‘Sam B Graphic Design’, where he mainly produces illustrations of Hockey teams, including the Sheffield Steelers.
Samuel has been creative and has had a talent for illustration since a young age. He also had a passion for ice hockey, as his dad worked as a professional photographer at the arena.
In April 2022, Samuel started his business via Instagram and Facebook. He has now created 37 illustrations, including one requested by Adrian Danielsen. Samuel stated that university has helped him massively to develop his skills.
He said: ‘’Studying has really helped me to develop my design skills, as it has introduced me to programs like Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop.
‘’I have found that I am able to turn around artwork in much faster time but still to a high standard. It has also helped me to understand the importance of branding and I now sell all my drawings with a blue background to create an identity for myself.
‘’My word of advice for any person looking to start out is to keep your own style and do not follow what is popular at the time. Keep it you.
‘’I can’t thank University Centre Rotherham enough for preparing me for the industry.’’
