Austin’s next chapter in cyber security

Austin James-Atkins is proof that a passion for learning, determination and the right support can open doors to exciting academic and career opportunities. After achieving a BSc (Hons) in Computing and Systems Development at University Centre Rotherham, Austin progressed to Sheffield Hallam University, where he completed an MSc in Cyber Security with Distinction. Now preparing to embark on a PhD, his journey demonstrates the opportunities that higher education can create.

Austin joined University Centre Rotherham (UCR) in September 2022, bringing with him an established interest in computing and technology.

“My favourite part of studying at UCR was the relaxed atmosphere, the smaller class sizes and having lecturers who were able to guide me forwards. They were there when I needed them the most.”

Before joining UCR, Austin was self-employed as a mobile phone and computer technician for several years, repairing devices, diagnosing hardware and software faults and installing computer systems. Austin wanted to build on these skills and gain an internationally recognised qualification within the IT industry.

Austin chose to study a BSc (Hons) in Computing and Systems Development at UCR, with the aim of strengthening his knowledge of computer architecture, networking and cyber security.

Reflecting on his experience, Austin particularly valued the supportive learning environment and the relationships he developed with teaching staff.

“My favourite part of studying at UCR was the relaxed atmosphere, the smaller class sizes and having lecturers who were able to guide me forwards. They were there when I needed them the most.”

He particularly enjoyed the modules delivered by lecturers Darren Bristow and Peter Li-Ping, whose teaching helped develop his technical interests further.

Alongside his studies, Austin also volunteered at UCR, providing technical support for networking equipment, including routers, firewalls and switches. This gave him further opportunities to develop his practical skills and apply his knowledge in a technical environment.

In 2025, Austin successfully graduated with a 2:1 honours degree in Computing and Systems Development, providing the academic foundation he needed to take the next step.

Progressing to a Master’s degree with Distinction

Following his graduation from UCR, Austin successfully secured a place on the MSc Cyber Security programme at Sheffield Hallam University, commencing in September 2025.

His hard work and commitment to his studies continued to pay off. Austin completed his Master’s degree with Distinction, achieving an overall mark of 73.11%.

For Austin, this was a significant achievement and an important milestone in his academic journey. It also demonstrated how the knowledge and skills developed during his undergraduate studies had prepared him for postgraduate-level learning.

Taking his passion for cyber security to PhD level

Austin’s enthusiasm for learning has continued to grow, and he is now preparing to take another leap in his academic career by applying to begin a PhD in February 2027.

His ambition is to establish a career in cyber security research and development. Ultimately, he hopes to become a lecturer, with his sights set on a position at University Centre Rotherham or Sheffield Hallam University, where he can share his knowledge and experience with future generations of students.

Explaining what motivates him to pursue doctoral study, Austin said:

“My passion for learning and growing will never stop. I want to pursue a career within cyber security as a researcher and also as a lecturer, to pass on my knowledge and experience to a younger cohort.”

Advice for students considering higher education

Having progressed from an undergraduate degree to a Master’s with Distinction, Austin is keen to encourage other students who are considering further study.

He believes making the most of the support available from lecturers and staff is essential when moving into higher education.

“My biggest advice to students is to listen to the guidance from lecturers and staff. They have the knowledge and experience to help push you forwards. Don’t be frightened to ask questions if you don’t understand something.”

He also highlights the importance of preparation and managing workloads effectively, encouraging students to get ahead with assignments, make use of feedback and plan their time carefully.

“Start early on assignments, follow the feedback where it is given, and budget your time accordingly. Preparation is key, so make sure you have your reading list ready and the resources you need to support your studies.”

And his final message to students is simple:

“What you put in, you will get out at the end. Work and study hard and it will definitely pay dividends.”

Austin’s story is still being written, with a PhD and a career in cyber security research within reach. His achievements show what higher education can make possible and the role University Centre Rotherham can play in helping students take their aspirations to the next level.
