Age: 30
Course: Media Make up
I started my degree elsewhere, however at the last minute it was changed from a full BA to an HND, which was not what I wanted.
Therefore I chose to complete my media make up degree at University Centre Rotherham (UCR) as there were no other Level 6 courses in the South Yorkshire area, and being a mature student with a husband and a job, I wasn’t in a position to uproot my life and move to another city like I perhaps would have done at 18.
Fern Lynch-Bowers“Making the decision to go back into education can be really hard after a long break, but I think it’s really important for people to realise that it’s never too late to start something new and that there will be support available whether it’s financial or classroom support.”
I enrolled onto the course with the attitude of “if not now, then when?” I initially felt I would be too old to do a degree at 26 (I’m now 30!), but whether I did the course or not, I would still be getting older so why not now. It’s my time, I thought.

Enrolling onto a course does not mean going backwards, it is a forwards step to achieving your goals.
The support I received at UCR has changed the course of my life as I am now back completing my PgCE to hopefully go on and teach media make up, a career that I had not considered before arriving at UCR in 2021.
I hope to complete my teaching qualification this year.
