PgCE/PGCE: Full-time

This one-year course is aimed at those who are not currently employed within a teaching environment. The course will help you to develop your teaching skills, reflect on current ideas about education and training and creatively explore the professional opportunities open to you.

Much of the course is focused on practical teaching. You will gain experience of learning and teaching alongside other teachers and trainers, with support from your tutors. You will develop key skills needed to be teaching in the education, training and skills sector.

We have an experienced teaching team who have a good reputation for ensuring you receive a quality teaching and learning experience.

Not only will you be supported in your studies by the teaching team, you will receive help from our learning-centred staff in relation to academic and research skills.

As the course is validated by the University of Huddersfield, all processes, from admissions through to assessment, are regularly reviewed to ensure that there is compliance with the University’s academic regulations, equivalence in academic standards, appropriate staffing and resources are maintained and that there is a provision of a good quality Higher Education experience for all students on the programme.

You must:

  • Have a minimum of a UK Bachelor’s Degree, or equivalent
  • Be able to demonstrate appropriate work experience in the area you wish to teach
  • Be prepared to undertake a placement to gain a minimum of 100 hours teaching experience
  • Provide an Enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and health clearances
  • Hold qualifications at Level 2 in Literacy and Numeracy (e.g. GCSE, Functional Skills)
  • Be able to communicate in standard spoken and written English
In addition, you must also:
  • Complete a satisfactory interview
  • Provide two satisfactory references

Upon successful completion of this course you could go into employment as a College Lecturer or Teacher, a Secondary School Teacher, Curriculum Team Leader, a Teacher in Uniformed Services or in learning and development. You could also be a teacher with adult and community learning, as well as charitable organisations.

Further Education Lecturer

Average salary - £33,700

Further Education Lecturers supervise and teach trade and technical education to students beyond secondary education and for adults and commercial training.

Day-to-day tasks**:
  • Plan, prepare and teach classes and workshops for students
  • Use e-learning technology to deliver lessons
  • Work with learning support staff to give students with special educational needs or disabilities extra help
  • Check and mark work and give feedback
  • Help and motivate students facing barriers to learning and make sure that all students work well together
  • Make referrals to other professionals e.g. mentors, personal tutors, careers advisers and counsellors
  • Meet with subject colleagues and other staff to plan and review work and share good practice
  • Plan and take part in events like open days or recruitment activities
Working environments

You could work in a sixth form college, an independent training centre, at a college or in a prison.

Training Officer

Average salary - £25,000

Training Officers plan and run courses and workshops for staff within organisations.

Day-to-day tasks**:
  • Assess individual and organisational training needs
  • Conduct staff appraisals and meetings with managers
  • Design engaging, appropriate, and inclusive learning activities
  • Deliver training using online, blended or classroom based methods
  • Assess individuals and the effectiveness of training programmes
  • Monitor trainees’ progress
  • Make sure training is cost-effective and within budget
