Living the American Dream: Student’s Editorial Work Features in International Magazine
A University Centre Rotherham student has gained fantastic industry experience by getting their editorial work published in a high-fashion American magazine.
Fern Strawson is a student on the BA (Hons) Theatrical Hair and Media Make-up Top-up course. The Hair and Beauty course also offers a Foundation Degree in Theatrical Hair and Media Make-up, as well as an HNC/HND in Performing Arts and Specialist Make-up, which is held at the Retford Post-16 Centre.
Top Posters Magazine is a photo magazine searching for expressive work from talented individuals that can be published to showcase their work. They categorise their submissions into fashion, beauty, portrait, kids, fine art, men, wedding day or nude. Fern worked with local photographers and models to have her skills publicised.
Fern has worked in the media make-up industry for many years, having worked for a local pantomime before her studies began. She also enjoys working with special FX make-up and student film, which she has displayed in productions at Leeds and Wakefield. Speaking about the magazine experience, Fern stated that it was a surreal feeling having her work recognised globally.
She said: ‘’I was ecstatic when the editorial piece got chosen to be published in Top Posters Magazine. The photographer I worked with submitted them, and to have my work recognised is proud moment.
‘’My passion is in Media Make-up as I really enjoy the transformation process. Seeing a model at the start of the process and then at the end gives me a sense of achievement that I have created great work. The University Centre Rotherham aims to give you the opportunity, plans industry trips and pushes you to achieve to the best of your ability.
‘’I get to creatively collaborate with other talented individuals to create amazing visual pieces, which I really enjoy.’’
Katie Asgari, Curriculum Manager in Hair and Beauty at the University Centre Rotherham, has had the pleasure of observing Fern’s incredible talent whilst she has been studying Theatrical Hair and Media Make-up. Katie spoke about how industry experience can build student’s confidence.
She said: ‘’Seeing Fern’s work being recognised internationally makes me very proud of her, as this is a huge achievement for her. Student’s work being recognised and credited gives them the confidence they need to take their talent further within the industry.
‘’The degree we offer here at University Centre Rotherham can enable students to develop a successful career in Media Make-up’’.
